1. First, why welds are harder to grind than they look
- Uneven hardness β the weld metal is often harder than the base, and the HAZ has a changed, brittle structure. The same pressure removes different amounts across the joint.
- Very heat-sensitive β stainless conducts heat poorly and the weld zone is a concentrated heat source, so pushing too hard turns it blue. Burn is not only ugly; it lowers corrosion resistance in that band.
- High dishing risk β the weld sits proud, so as you press to grind it down, the moment you cut through the cap the belt digs straight into the base and leaves a dish that can't be recovered.
- The grain has to match β on decorative parts and No.4 satin especially, the finished weld's grain direction and roughness must match the base metal, or a bright band gives it away.
2. Step 1: Remove the cap / reinforcement (40β60 grit)
Goal: knock the raised weld down to near the base surface β near, not flush.
- Leave stock: leave 0.2β0.3mm for the later steps; don't grind flush in one go. This is your first insurance against dishing.
- Direction: grind along the weld, not across it.
- Pressure: give it plenty β zirconia only self-sharpens when pressure fractures the grain; too little pressure just slips and heats. Use a hard contact wheel.

3. Step 2: Level & blend the transition (80β120 grit)
Goal: remove the deep scratches from roughing and make the transition between weld and base smooth.
- Lower the pressure, lighter than roughing.
- Don't jump grit: 40β80 is fine, 40β180 leaves pits. Never more than double the grit number per step β that's the rule.
Recommended: PZ633+ (80/100), DY528 (80/120), BORA2 (80/100/120), PZ533 (to 120, cooler), WY1599 (80/120 ceramic).
4. Step 3: Match the grain (180 grit and finer)
Goal: make the weld area's grain and roughness match the base metal β so you can't tell it was welded.
- Base is No.4 satin β finish at 120β180 grit for the hairline pattern
- Need Ra 0.8 (common food-grade spec) β 180β220 grit
- Technique: soft contact wheel or flat platen, light pressure, one-direction grain, and always cross onto the base metal
Recommended: WY1531 (60β400 full grit, one belt through medium-to-fine), WY1513 (100β400), JA513 (60β600, fullest range), JA537 (180/320/400, anti-clog fine grinding).
5. Four common defects, and how to fix them
